Abstract
The purpose of this study is to understand the features of the quality of life of school children who visited the department of pediatric neurosurgery. Fifty-nine school children, aged from 6 to 15, and their parents completed the Korean version of the Pediatric Quality of Life inventoryTM 4.0 Generic core Scales (PedsQLTM 4.0). The Korean-Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence (K-WPPSI) or Korean-Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (K-WISC-III) was administered to all the children. Children with neurosurgical diseases reported lower quality of life than the normal control group. Also, children who experienced neurosurgical operations showed significantly lower social and school functioning. Meanwhile, no significant difference was found in terms of physical and psychological functioning between children with neurosurgical operations and without operations. The results of the study support previous studies. Not only neurosurgical treatment itself but also more comprehensive psychological intervention was suggested.
